Frequently asked questions

How are the 6 hours of driving scheduled?

The 6 hours are divided into three 2-hour driving sessions. Sessions are scheduled based on instructor availability.

Does Driver’s Education guarantee that my student will pass the road test?

No. Driver’s Education provides required training and helps students develop safe driving skills, but every student progresses differently. Additional practice or professional driving lessons may be recommended before testing.

Do you offer driving lessons for adults?

Absolutely! We work with teens and adults, including beginners, nervous drivers, individuals who haven't driven in years, and drivers who simply want additional practice. We can recommend the appropriate amount of training based on your current skill level and goals.

What will I work on during driving lessons?

Training is customized to the driver's needs and may include vehicle control, turns, lane positioning, intersections, parking, backing, traffic awareness, defensive driving, highway driving, and road-test preparation.

Do you offer a package specifically for adult drivers?

Yes! Our Adult Drive S.M.A.R.T. Package is $350 and includes 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

Can I take my road test at Drive Smart Academy instead of the DMV?

Yes! Drive Smart Academy offers DMV-alternative road testing for eligible drivers.

Do I still have to go to the DMV after passing my road test?

Yes. Passing your road test with Drive Smart Academy completes the driving-test portion of the licensing process. You will still need to complete the remaining licensing requirements with the South Carolina DMV.

Can I take the road test immediately after getting my permit?

Current SCDMV information says applicants using a Class D third-party tester generally must have held their beginner’s permit for the required period, and the third-party tester manual states 180 days. SCDMV separately updated its general permit rule so people 18 and older can qualify after holding a beginner’s permit for at least 30 days.

How do I register or schedule an appointment?

We recommend registering as early as possible - especially for teen Driver’s Ed and road tests - so classroom seats and instructor times stay available.

Do I have to pay everything upfront?

Payment requirements depend on the service or package. All services require a deposit to secure your spot, with the remaining balance due at the time of your appointment.

How far in advance should I schedule?

We recommend scheduling as early as possible. Behind-the-wheel appointments can fill quickly, especially during summer, school breaks, and before major school events.

What happens if I miss my appointment?

A $25 no-show/late-cancellation fee will apply. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to make a change to your appointment.

Can I request a specific instructor?

You may request an instructor, but instructor requests are based on availability and cannot always be guaranteed.

Will my student be ready to drive alone after 6 hours?

The required professional training is only part of becoming a safe driver. Students should continue practicing regularly with a parent or responsible licensed adult. Some students may need additional professional instruction before they are ready to drive independently.
